Chhat puja is celebrated largely in Bihar. It is also considered a very strict puja since women observe a grave fast, sometimes even without water. Chhath is a famous festival that starts on the 6th day of the Hindu calendar month “Kartika."
This festival is dedicated to worshipping the sun god and his wife Usha.
Four Days of Chhath Puja Explained
- Nahay Khay (Day 1): This marks the beginning of Chhat Puja, during which women eat only one meal and devotees dip in the Ganga.
- Kharna (Day 2)- Kharna is the second day of vrat where women observe a waterless fast from sunrise to sunset. They only have food after offering food to the sun god.
- Sandhya Arghya (Day 3)- On day 3, arghya is offered to the sun god at dusk. Fasting among women continues during the night.
- Usha Arghya (Day 4)- Arghya is offered to the rising sun at dawn. The 36-hour-long fast is broken then after offering Prasad to the sun god.
A festival honoring Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya
Surya was born to Mata Aditi on the sixth day of Kartika. For this reason, Chhath Puja is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Surya and the month of Kartika is considered a holy month throughout the year. There are many legends associated with the significance of Chhath Puja. Chhath Puja is referenced in both the Indian epics. It is believed that goddess Sita performed Chhath Puja in Munger.
